Sean “Diddy” Combs faced a legal setback on Friday when Judge Arun Subramanian denied his legal team’s request for a gag order aimed at preventing government officials from leaking information to the media. The ruling comes as Combs remains in custody on sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
According to court documents obtained by Thirsty for News, Subramanian ruled that while there was no formal finding of wrongdoing, it was essential to ensure both parties followed legal procedures to protect the integrity of the trial.
“To be clear, this order isn’t based on a finding that there has been any wrongdoing thus far, as the Court has made no findings at this juncture relating to defendant’s allegations that information related to the case has been leaked,” Subramanian wrote. “The point of this order is to help ensure that nothing happens from now on that would interfere with a fair trial.”
The ruling follows accusations by Combs’ legal team that government agents leaked security footage of him abusing ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. His attorneys claimed the footage was released to CNN earlier this year, with the intention of tarnishing Combs’ public image and compromising his ability to mount a fair defense.
“Rather than using the videotape as trial evidence, alongside other evidence that gives it context and meaning, the agents misused it in the most prejudicial and damaging way possible,” the court filing stated.
Combs’ team further argued that the leak was intended to inflict reputational damage, making it nearly impossible for the rapper to defend himself against the allegations.
Despite denying the gag order, Judge Subramanian stressed the importance of both federal agents and Combs’ team adhering to the rules surrounding grand jury proceedings. His ruling aims to preserve the fairness of the trial, preventing further media leaks that could compromise the legal process.
“The Court’s priority is ensuring a fair trial,” the judge emphasized. “From this point forward, nothing should interfere with achieving that goal.”
As of now, representatives for Sean Combs have not commented on the judge’s ruling or the accusations regarding the leaked footage.
