Elon Musk reportedly acquired a $35 million estate in Austin, Texas, with room for his growing blended family — including three exes and at least 11 children — to potentially live together.
Sources close to the billionaire told The New York Times that the lavish 14,400-square-foot mansion is styled like a Tuscan villa, reflecting Musk’s vision of a harmonious family compound.
Located behind the main property is an additional six-bedroom house, which Musk is said to have helped finance. His goal? To create a space where two of his children’s mothers, Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis and singer Grimes, can live in “adjoining properties.” Musk reportedly wants to “schedule time” with his younger children and foster close relationships among his kids.
Musk and Zilis share 2-year-old twins, Strider and Azure, as well as a third child born earlier this year. Grimes has three children with Musk — 4-year-old X AE A-XII, 2-year-old Exa Dark Sideræl, and 2-year-old Techno Mechanicus.
While Zilis has reportedly already moved into one of the homes with her children, Grimes has “steered clear,” according to sources. She and Musk are locked in a heated custody battle over their three children, adding complexity to the family dynamic.
In October 2023, Musk quietly filed a lawsuit in Texas seeking parental rights for his children with Grimes. He claimed to have had “actual care, control, and possession” of their kids since birth in Texas, where he lives full-time. Days later, Grimes responded with her own legal filing in California, arguing that she and the children had relocated to the West Coast by the end of 2022, thus challenging Musk’s Texas jurisdiction.
Family law expert Stephanie I. Blum speculated that Musk’s choice to file in Texas could be a strategic move. “Texas law places a cap on the amount of child support the higher earner has to pay, regardless of their wealth,” Blum said. With Musk’s net worth standing at $268.8 billion as of Tuesday, according to Forbes, the stakes are high.
The situation becomes more complicated with Musk’s estranged relationship with some of his older children. He shares adult twins Griffin and Vivian and triplet sons Kai, Saxon, and Damian with his first wife, Justine Musk. Vivian, who is transgender, has publicly criticized Musk for his controversial views on gender identity, calling him a “serial adulterer” and accusing him of lying about his family.
While the Tuscan-style compound offers room for all of Musk’s children, insiders say it’s unlikely that Vivian or his older kids with Justine will join.
With Zilis already settling in and Grimes engaged in a custody dispute, Musk’s vision of a united family compound remains uncertain. The world will be watching closely to see if the Tesla founder’s ambitious family plans come to fruition.
