Adam Cole is back and ready to reclaim his spot in AEW after being sidelined for a year due to a broken ankle. His highly anticipated return match takes place on the October 30 episode of Dynamite against Buddy Matthews. In preparation for his comeback, Cole sat down with the Stick to Wrestling Podcast to discuss his future in AEW and reflect on what could have been before his injury.
When asked if he plans to finish his wrestling career with AEW, Cole didn’t hesitate to affirm his intention, though he acknowledged that nothing in wrestling is ever set in stone.
“Yes, yes (it is my goal to end my career in AEW). I believe so. Of course, like we say in pro wrestling, obviously never say never. You never know what’s gonna happen but I love AEW with all of my heart. I love our crew, I love our boss, I love our fans. I absolutely love it here and have no real plans of leaving.”
During the interview, Cole also addressed speculation about his AEW World Championship pursuit before his injury. While he couldn’t confirm if he was slated to dethrone MJF, he admitted it certainly seemed like the title was within his grasp.
“So, as you know in the world of professional wrestling, there are constantly different ideas being thrown around or changes constantly. So, do I know for sure that I was gonna be in line to becoming the AEW World Champion? I’m not totally sure, but that’s certainly where it seemed like we were going.”
Cole opened up about the mental toll of dealing with his injury, especially with the possibility of a world title run in mind.
“That’s certainly the direction that I think very possibly could have happened had I not been injured, which really did add to the mental anguish of the entire process. But again, there are constant roadblocks thrown our way all the time. We gotta adapt, we have to pivot, and I still have a lot of my wrestling career left, so I certainly hope the AEW World Title is in my future.”
With Cole now cleared to compete, fans are eager to see him back in action and chase the world title he seemed destined for before his setback. His comeback adds another layer of intrigue to AEW’s landscape as he looks to pick up where he left off.
