Drake and Chris Brown are back in the spotlight, but this time, it’s not for a chart-topping single. The two artists are now facing legal trouble over their 2019 hit “No Guidance,” with a New Jersey singer, Tykeiya Dore, alleging that they stole key elements from her 2016 track “I Got It.”
According to court documents obtained by Thirsty for News, Dore filed the lawsuit on October 25, claiming copyright infringement. She alleges that the duo borrowed heavily from her song’s “chord progressions, tempo, pitch, key, melody, harmony, rhythm, structure, phrasing, and lyrics.”
The lawsuit also draws a connection to Drake’s longtime producer, Vinylz, real name Anderson Hernandez, accusing him of discovering the track through Benji Filmz, who directed Dore’s music video. Dore claims Vinylz had access to Benji’s YouTube channel, where he may have come across her work.
Dore further asserts that “I Got It” was not only stolen but that a copyright comparison video uploaded by her attorney, Marc Stephens, was wrongfully taken down from YouTube. In response, she is suing YouTube and Google for “defamation, common law fraud, and emotional distress,” seeking $5 million in damages.
This isn’t the first time Drake and Chris Brown have been hit with similar allegations. In a previous lawsuit, Braindon Cooper and Timothy Valentine accused them and producer Noah “40” Shebib of copying their 2016 track “I Love Your Dress.” At the time, Drake and Brown dismissed the accusations, stating that it was impossible for them to scan “millions of songs” to steal music. They added, “It is implausible to assume that every musician in Toronto collaborates and shares music with Drake.”
Drake and Chris Brown have yet to respond to Dore’s latest lawsuit, but this legal battle could shape up to be a significant one, given the weight of the accusations.
Do you think the similarities between "I Got It" and "No Guidance" are intentional, or could this be a coincidence? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
