Olivia Rodrigo is no stranger to drama, but even she didn’t expect her first brush with the law to be this wild. While chatting with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the 21-year-old pop star spilled the tea about an unexpected run-in with Border Patrol during her Guts world tour—and it was anything but smooth.
Rodrigo revealed that things took a bizarre turn when she and her team were crossing the border from Canada to Portland. Border agents knocked on the bus and asked specifically for her, leaving Olivia to think, “Maybe they just want an autograph.” Instead, she found herself face-to-face with an officer armed with a gun, inside an interrogation room.
“It’s 3:00 a.m., and I’m delirious,” Rodrigo recalled, painting a vivid picture of her unexpected situation. The questioning quickly turned serious when the officer asked her, “Have you ever been arrested?”
Rodrigo denied it, but the officer pressed her again. “Are you sure?” the officer asked, leaving Olivia second-guessing herself. “I started gaslighting myself, thinking, ‘Oh my God, maybe I was arrested and didn’t know it.’”
The interrogation dragged on for 30 minutes, with Rodrigo saying she was on the verge of a panic attack. “He told me I could go to jail if I was lying,” she admitted, describing how scared she was in that moment.
Finally, the officer asked her to confirm her name again. “Olivia Rodrigo. R-O-D-R-I-G-O,” she said. That’s when the whole mix-up came to light.
“There’s a girl who looks just like you, same age, named Olivia Rodriguez,” the officer explained. “She’s been arrested multiple times.” The audience erupted in laughter as Rodrigo finished telling the story.
But that wasn’t the only misstep for Rodrigo on this tour. She also took a literal fall during a show in Australia earlier this month when she accidentally tumbled through a trapdoor mid-performance.
“At the time, I brushed it off,” she said, but admitted the moment was “really scary.” Rodrigo later went to the hospital to check for a concussion, but she reassured fans, “Nothing happened, I’m totally fine.” She even poked fun at the moment on TikTok, sharing the video with the caption “subtleforeshadowing,” a nod to the lyrics of her song “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl.”
Despite the border scare and stage mishap, Rodrigo’s Guts tour is far from over. The tour picks back up in March 2024, kicking off in South America before heading to Europe. “That’s showbiz, baby,” Rodrigo quipped, showing that not even a fall—or a case of mistaken identity—can keep her down.
Will these wild tour moments make it into her next album? Time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—Olivia Rodrigo is taking everything in stride.
