The search is narrowing for the next Lara Croft as Amazon MGM Studios works on their live-action Tomb Raider series.
While no one has officially been cast yet, sources at Deadline report that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and Barbie actress Lucy Boynton are among the top contenders to play the iconic adventurer.
Fans may also recognize other names on the studio’s wishlist, including Emma Corrin (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil), though neither is currently scheduled to test for the role. With the series set to be a key component of Amazon’s Tomb Raider universe—complete with a movie and video game—finding the right actress to embody Lara Croft is critical.
Amazon officially greenlit the live-action series back in May 2024, marking the third major adaptation of the Tomb Raider franchise. Angelina Jolie famously portrayed Croft in two films, while Alicia Vikander took the reins in the 2018 reboot. Although Vikander has expressed interest in reprising the role, there’s no indication she’s involved in this project.
The tone and style of the new series remain unclear. Jolie’s films were more aligned with the campy, action-heavy feel of the early games, while Vikander’s reboot leaned into the grittier narrative of the 2013 Tomb Raider video game. The new adaptation could potentially blend elements from both interpretations, but it’s too soon to know what direction Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is overseeing the series, will take.
This live-action Tomb Raider series is part of Amazon’s push into video game adaptations. The platform has seen recent success with Fallout and Like a Dragon: Yakuza, and December will bring the release of Secret Level, an animated anthology based on several games. With Universal and Paramount also capitalizing on video game franchises, Amazon appears eager to stay in the race with a fresh take on Tomb Raider.
The question now is whether this new series will resonate with audiences as effectively as other game adaptations have. If Amazon can find the right balance, the new Tomb Raider series could appeal to both die-hard fans of the games and those unfamiliar with the franchise.
