Los Angeles erupted into chaos on Wednesday night as Dodger fans flooded the streets to celebrate their team’s thrilling 7-6 win over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the World Series, clinching their 8th championship title. But the excitement quickly escalated into mayhem as fans, some waving Dodger flags, took to the streets, sparking unrest and leaving the LAPD scrambling to control the situation.
Witnesses captured intense footage showing crowds spilling across L.A., lighting fireworks, breaking windows, and reportedly looting stores in the downtown area. Some fans took their celebration to the streets, performing donuts with their cars, while others set a city bus ablaze, filling the air with black smoke.
Police responded in full force, issuing orders for crowds to disperse at multiple intersections overtaken by fans dancing and cheering. Officers faced resistance as some individuals threw rocks and bottles, creating tense stand-offs. The LAPD urged motorists to avoid downtown due to heavy traffic and roadblocks as they worked to restore order.
Despite the unruly scenes, L.A. landmarks, including City Hall, LAX, the Hollywood sign, and Crypto.com Arena, lit up in Dodger Blue in tribute to the team’s historic win. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass congratulated the Dodgers with a message on X but remained silent on the disruptions that ensued.
So far, 12 people have been arrested, primarily for looting. As the dust settles, Angelenos and authorities alike are left reflecting on a night meant for celebration that instead veered into chaos.
