Drake stirred up some controversy during the Toronto Raptors’ game against the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night, taking shots at former Raptors star DeMar DeRozan. While the night was meant to honor Vince Carter’s jersey retirement, Drake turned attention to DeRozan, poking fun at the idea of ever celebrating the player who had a memorable nine-year run with the team.
During the game’s broadcast, Drake called DeRozan a “goof,” adding, “If you ever put up a DeRozan banner, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself.” The comments left fans buzzing, especially since DeRozan has been friendly with the Toronto native in the past. Notably, DeRozan made an appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s music video for “Not Like Us” and attended Drake’s Pop Out concert in L.A., hinting at a solid relationship with the rapper—at least until now.
Drake and DeRozan have had a playful rapport over the years, often connecting courtside during games. But DeRozan, who now plays for the Chicago Bulls, seems to have a more forgiving view of their dynamic. In a recent interview with the Sacramento Bee, DeRozan was all positive, saying, “Drake’s still my man, still my man, none of it changed.” He compared their dynamic to that of legendary sports rivalries, explaining, “It’s music, entertainment… what you want to see as a fan.”
The playful shade and DeRozan’s lighthearted response seem to capture the friendly competition and banter between two hometown icons. It’s clear the Toronto-native rapper is still passionate about his team—and perhaps just as passionate about ribbing his friends.
