Things have escalated between Dr. Dre and his former marriage counselor, Dr. Sophy, as a heated legal battle unfolds.
Dr. Sophy, who served as Dre’s counselor during his divorce from Nicole Young, is pursuing a $10 million lawsuit against the music icon, alleging that Dre subjected him to ongoing intimidation, threats, and homophobic remarks over the past year. Sophy claims that Dre “treated the mediation process as an opportunity for healing,” but instead, Dre “decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy.”
The lawsuit alleges that Dre’s frustrations led to a nearly year-long “campaign” of intimidating late-night texts, threats, and offensive rhetoric. According to Sophy, this campaign left him feeling unsafe and eventually led to him obtaining a restraining order.
In response, Dr. Dre’s lawyer, Howard King, released a statement in early October, countering Sophy’s claims. King asserts that Sophy “slandered” Dre to sway Dre’s son against him, portraying Dre in a damaging light. Dre, on his part, admits to using “colorful language” in texts but insists he never issued a “credible threat of future violence.”
Dre’s legal response takes a powerful stance, accusing Dr. Sophy of invoking racist stereotypes. In court documents, Dre alleges that Sophy’s portrayal of him is grounded in “the racist caricature that depicts Black men, like [Dre], as inherently violent.” Dre argues that this portrayal is especially apparent in how Sophy links him to individuals with past violent behaviors, using these associations to reinforce harmful biases.
Dre also denies several allegations, including claims that he sent threatening texts from burner phones and that FBI agents visited Dr. Sophy’s home at Dre’s request. As the legal drama continues, Dre is challenging the restraining order and resisting any further protective orders that Dr. Sophy might seek.
