A Michigan voter caused a stir on Election Day when she attempted to cast her ballot while wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat, leading to a confrontation with poll workers in Battle Creek.
The woman, identified as Michelle Gregoire, shared footage of the exchange, showing her refusal to remove the hat despite being informed it violated Michigan’s “electioneering” rules, which ban clothing or accessories tied to specific political campaigns at polling places.
In the video, Gregoire is seen holding her ground, insisting that the hat doesn’t signify her support for any political party, despite the cap’s association with Donald Trump and the GOP. “Actually, I am an elected libertarian, so f*** off!” she retorted after being asked to take it off.
Gregoire claims that one poll worker attempted to take her ballot and touched her during the exchange, which she described as “assault.” She says she managed to submit her vote but was denied a voting sticker afterward. Following the incident, she filed a police report, though law enforcement reportedly told her they could not act immediately as to avoid disrupting voters.
Posting on X, Gregoire called for Americans to “fight against censorship, fight against fascism, fight against the state,” encouraging people to stand up for their rights.
Michigan, a hotly contested battleground state, enforces electioneering laws prohibiting political endorsements at polling stations. It’s one of 21 states with similar restrictions to ensure a neutral environment during voting.
