Netflix’s Halloween lineup saw a new thriller emerge as the breakout hit this year. Don’t Move, starring Yellowstone’s Kelsey Asbille, was released on October 25th and quickly captivated audiences, dominating the streaming platform’s viewership charts during the spooky season.
On Tuesday, Netflix released its data for the most-watched titles during Halloween week (October 28th to November 3rd), and Don’t Move led the pack with an impressive 42.9 million hours viewed. This surge in popularity didn’t even account for the film’s opening weekend numbers, which were logged in the previous week’s data. The thriller’s viewership was unmatched, making it the clear favorite among subscribers.
The runner-up for the week, Time Cut, a teen horror/thriller that debuted just before Halloween, still couldn’t come close to Don’t Move’s numbers, racking up 35 million hours viewed. For context, that was over three times more than any other English-language movie on the platform during the period, aside from Don’t Move.
Rounding out Netflix’s Top 10 Movies were Hijack ’93 and the Martha Stewart documentary Martha, each with over 10 million hours viewed, followed by Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, which celebrated its third week on the charts.
For those unfamiliar, Don’t Move follows the harrowing tale of a woman injected with a slow-moving paralytic agent by a mysterious stranger in an isolated forest. As the paralytic drug takes hold, she must fight for her life and seek help before becoming completely immobile. The official Netflix synopsis teases the intense plot:
“A grieving woman hoping to find solace deep in an isolated forest encounters a stranger who injects her with a paralytic agent. As the agent gradually takes over her body, she must run, hide, and fight for her life before her entire nervous system shuts down.”
Produced by the legendary Sam Raimi, director of the original Evil Dead trilogy, Don’t Move had the Raimi seal of approval, which drew many horror enthusiasts to give it a watch. This wave of interest has clearly carried over into the film’s second week, solidifying its status as a top Halloween season hit.
