Travis Kelce is standing by his brother Jason Kelce after a video of the retired Philadelphia Eagles star confronting a college student went viral.
On Wednesday’s episode of their podcast, New Heights, the Kansas City Chiefs player addressed the incident, in which a Pennsylvania State University student hurled a homophobic slur related to Travis’ relationship with Taylor Swift.
“You had some f–king clown come up to you talking about your family,” Travis said, referring to the student’s comment that Travis “is a f–t for dating Taylor Swift.” Jason, fired back at the time with a pointed response: “Who’s the f–t now?”
Travis acknowledged his brother’s reaction and understood the impulse to defend his loved ones. “You reacted in a way that was defending your family and you might have used some words that you regret using,” he said. Despite the backlash, Travis praised Jason for “own[ing]” his mistake and addressing it with an apology on ESPN, calling his brother’s response “sincere.”
“I know it’s weighing on you, brother,” Travis empathized. “That s–t sucks. You shouldn’t feel this much. … Everybody passing around the videos is gonna make it a bigger situation than what it really is. You don’t choose hate. That’s not who you are.”
Jason, who has been vocal about his regret since the incident, doubled down on the podcast, expressing remorse for the language he used. “The thing I regret the most is saying that word, to be honest with you,” he admitted, calling the slur “over the line” and the situation “f–king ridiculous.” He reflected on how he could have handled it differently: “Now there’s a video out there with him saying that word and it’s not good for anybody. … It would have been a nothingburger if I just kept walking.”
In his initial apology, Jason said, “I’m not happy with anything that took place. I’m not proud of it.” While Swift has not publicly commented on the incident, she was seen hugging Jason at Travis’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, showcasing their continued support for one another.
Travis and Taylor Swift have been dating since last summer, and the relationship has been highly publicized. The viral incident only adds more attention to their relationship and the people around them.
