Liam Payne’s death has officially been ruled accidental, according to the prosecutor overseeing the case in Argentina.
A law enforcement source in Buenos Aires confirmed to TMZ that the former One Direction star did not commit suicide. Instead, it was determined that the effects of the drugs in his system led to a fatal fall from the balcony of his suite at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel on October 16.
As reported earlier, three individuals have been arrested in connection to the case: a hotel housekeeper, a friend of Payne’s, and an alleged drug dealer. Their arrests followed multiple raids conducted by local authorities in pursuit of answers regarding the singer’s untimely death.
Payne had been staying at the Buenos Aires hotel after his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, returned to Florida. The couple had traveled to Argentina to support Payne’s former bandmate, Niall Horan, who performed at the Movistar Arena two weeks prior.
An initial autopsy revealed that Payne had various substances in his system, including “pink cocaine” and “cristal.” Photos from his hotel room indicated the presence of drug paraphernalia and raised questions with items like a Dove soap box that investigators scrutinized for links to drug possession.
Payne’s struggles with addiction were no secret. He shared in a YouTube video last year that he had completed a 100-day rehab stint. In the months leading up to his death, Payne reportedly assured those around him that he remained sober and seemed to be in “good spirits.” What triggered his lapse into substance use remains unclear, but authorities are focusing their investigation on those responsible for supplying the drugs.
Payne, who passed at the age of 31, leaves behind his parents, Geoff and Karen, sisters Nicola and Ruth, and his 7-year-old son, Bear, whom he shares with ex Cheryl Cole. His funeral service is expected to take place in the UK in the coming week.
