Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s The Batman left a lasting impression, so it’s no surprise fans are eager to see him return in the sequel.
During his appearance on The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Farrell hinted at his potential role in The Batman Part II, though he admitted he’s yet to see a script.
“I have no idea what the second film is gonna be,” Farrell said. “I heard Penguin features in it. I haven’t read it.” While he’s unsure about the direction of the next installment, Farrell expressed intrigue about the series’ future, especially with The Penguin series approaching its finale. “There’s been so much pipe laid. It’d be interesting to see where it goes from here, you know? But he would be quite different,” he added.
Farrell’s first turn as the Penguin saw him as a secondary antagonist to Robert Pattinson’s Batman, marking the first live-action portrayal of the character since Danny DeVito’s memorable performance in Batman Returns (1992). This iteration established a complex and gritty version of the iconic villain, laying the foundation for HBO’s The Penguin. The series follows Oz’s rise in Gotham’s underworld after the Riddler’s catastrophic attack, featuring clashes with criminal powerhouses like Sofia Falcone and Sal Maroni. The show has been met with widespread acclaim, particularly for Farrell’s transformative performance and Cristin Milioti’s compelling role.
Despite the success of The Batman, moving forward with the sequel has taken time. Originally set for a 2025 release, The Batman Part II is now scheduled to hit theaters in October 2026. Although details about the plot remain under wraps, director Matt Reeves has confirmed production will begin next year.
Reeves, who refers to the series as his “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” is expected to continue weaving a complex narrative that could see Batman confronting the consequences of the ongoing battle between Oz, Sofia, and other Gotham villains.
Reeves has hinted at the introduction of new villains, which means updates on the sequel’s cast could come soon. Once those details are revealed, fans will have a clearer idea of how the Penguin’s story ties into the next chapter of Gotham’s saga. Whether Pattinson’s Dark Knight faces fallout from Oz’s power struggle or navigates a web of new adversaries, the Penguin’s return is sure to shake things up.
As the cameras prepare to roll in early 2025, The Batman Part II promises to build on the intricate world that Reeves has crafted. Fans can anticipate more crime, chaos, and perhaps a deeper look at how Oz plans to solidify his place in Gotham’s dark underbelly.
