Exciting news for Donkey Kong Country fans: the much-anticipated expansion at Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Japan is set to open on December 11! This new section will also debut at Epic Universe in Orlando next year, offering an immersive experience inspired by the beloved video game series.
During a Nintendo Direct presentation, legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto gave fans a sneak peek at the expansion, entering the attraction to the iconic track “DK Island Swing.” As visitors step into the Donkey Kong world, they’ll discover familiar elements like crates bearing Rambi’s image and interactive bongo drums. When three guests beat the rhythm together, Rambi the rhino makes a surprise appearance!
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from this expansion:
The highlight of the Donkey Kong Country expansion is an all-new mine cart ride inspired by the thrilling track segments from the games. The journey includes nods to Donkey Kong Country Returns and the original DK arcade game, with animatronic appearances from Cranky Kong and Squawks the parrot. Riders will be on a mission to protect the Golden Banana from the Tiki Tak Tribe and Tiki Tong, promising an action-packed adventure.
Guests can find the four letters that spell “KONG” scattered throughout the area, which can be scanned with Power-Up Bands—now available in Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong designs! These collectible bands unlock special interactions, adding an extra layer of immersion for park visitors.
Hungry fans can visit the Jungle Beat Shakes stand to try unique themed snacks like the DK Wild Hot Dog, topped with avocado sauce and Cool Ranch Doritos, and the DK Crush Sundae, served in a barrel-themed collector’s mug. For exclusive Donkey Kong merchandise, Funky’s Fly ‘n’ Buy shop will have plushes, apparel, and souvenirs dedicated to DK and Diddy.
With so much fanservice packed into this expansion, Donkey Kong Country is shaping up to be a must-see addition to Super Nintendo World. Although we didn’t get a full preview of the mine cart ride in action, anticipation is building, and fans can expect plenty of photos and videos of the park experience soon after opening.
