Fans eagerly awaiting the Britney Spears biopic have finally received an update from director Jon M. Chu.

First announced in August, the movie is set to be based on Britney’s tell-all memoir The Woman in Me. Chu, who has been collaborating with Britney on the project, opened up about the film’s current status and addressed some recent casting speculation.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Chu expressed his deep admiration for the pop icon. “I cannot talk much about the Britney story other than I have been a Britney fan for many years,” he shared. “She represents a generation of people growing up in the 2000s and late ’90s, and she has a story that deserves to be told properly. There’s a lot about us in it.”

However, he noted that the project is still in its early stages. “We haven’t written the script yet, we haven’t hired a writer yet,” Chu revealed. Despite that, he gave insight into the vision behind the biopic. “In this initial conception, I think it’s a lot about how we treat people, young people, stars that we think we own, women, mothers. There’s a lot of things in there that I would love to explore.”

Rumors recently swirled about Britney collaborating with Chu on a film version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat after the singer mentioned the director’s name on social media. Chu responded with playful curiosity. “You’ll have to ask Britney what she meant by all of that, but she wrote my name in one of her Instagrams or tweets. That’s an honor. I love that. I think she likes to tease the audience in different ways. So I’ll let it be a mystery on her part, but I’m excited to work with her,” he said.

As for who could potentially portray Britney in the movie, speculation has been rife, with a big-name actress recently expressing interest in taking on the role.

It’s clear that while the project is in its infancy, the anticipation and excitement are palpable among fans and filmmakers alike.
