Tragic news from the Carrey family as Jim Carrey’s older sister, Rita Carrey, has passed away at the age of 60. The heartbreaking announcement was made by her husband, Alex, who shared on Facebook that Rita died “peacefully and quietly” on Thursday.
Alex honored Rita’s memory with touching words, calling her his “bestest friend,” “lover,” and “beautiful wife.” He painted a picture of her generous spirit, writing, “Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone even total strangers. As everyone knows, Christmas was Rita’s favorite holiday; actually, it was every day for her, and she started a fundraiser to help a local charity.”
In a tribute fitting of Rita’s love for the season, Alex announced a candlelight vigil in her memory set for early December, and he encouraged fans to attend the “Christmas on the Terrace” event in St. Catharines, Ontario. Donations in her name were also encouraged to continue her charitable spirit.
Rita’s legacy goes beyond her role as a beloved radio personality. Brian Salmon, her former co-host at 91.7 Giant FM, paid homage to her generous nature and how she shared joy with those around her. “Rita rarely bragged about her Hollywood connections,” Brian shared, adding that she often collected props from her brother Jim Carrey’s films to auction off for charity.
Rita’s career was full of vibrancy, extending to music and public speaking. She performed in a classic rock band for many years and even shared the stage with the legendary Bruce Springsteen. She also opened for Canadian rock icons such as April Wine and Honeymoon Suite.
Born in Canada to Kathleen and Percy Carrey, Rita grew up in a lively household alongside her three siblings, John, Patricia, and, of course, Jim. Her kindness and talent touched everyone who knew her, and she will be fondly remembered for her warmth and ability to spread joy wherever she went.
As of now, there has been no comment from Jim Carrey, but tributes continue to pour in for Rita and her indelible mark on those who knew her.
Our thoughts go out to Rita’s loved ones and all who were touched by her light.
