Jon Jones made a statement at UFC 309, leaving fans and critics stunned with a dominant dismantling of Stipe Miocic. After taking the heavyweight champ to school with a spinning back kick that ended the fight in the third round, the GOAT reaffirmed why he holds that title. But his stellar performance might have shut down his dream matchup. UFC CEO Dana White isn’t convinced that the fight Jones wants most—against light heavyweight king Alex Pereira—should ever happen.
“Jon’s too big,” White bluntly said at the post-fight presser. He continued, “Did you see how he took Stipe down in that first round? I like Alex Pereira… It just doesn’t make sense to make that fight.”
White had been firm even before UFC 309 that Jones vs. Pereira wasn’t on his radar, unless Jon faced interim heavyweight champ Tom Aspinall first. While the UFC boss didn’t bring up Aspinall this time, he made it clear that he’s not budging unless Jones and Pereira push him into a corner. Even then, White admitted, “If they both want it bad enough… maybe I would do it. But it’s just… what’s the reason to go up and fight a guy that’s so much bigger than you and such a good wrestler? Money? That’s definitely a reason but… I don’t want to make any of that kind of money.”
The UFC exec summed it up by saying he’d rather see Pereira continue dominating his division, but acknowledged, “They’re grown ass men… if they go crazy on me and they want to do it… I guess we’ll talk about it.”
So, while Jon Jones’ latest win has set the MMA world on fire, Dana White’s reluctance to greenlight the superfight against Alex Pereira keeps fans hanging in suspense. Whether it’s about protecting champions, ensuring fair matchups, or keeping divisions intact, the UFC boss is clear—he’s not keen on risking it unless both fighters push hard enough to make it undeniable. For now, it’s a waiting game, but with Jones’ ambitions and Pereira’s rising star, anything is possible.
