The feel-good hit Ted Lasso may have stolen hearts around the world, but its third season didn’t kick it out of the park for everyone.

According to Believe: The Untold Story Behind Ted Lasso, the Show That Kicked Its Way Into Our Hearts by Jeremy Egner, the Apple TV+ comedy faced backlash from a “small but hostile crowd” who felt Season 3 was too scattered, especially with storylines diverging for fan-favorites like Keeley and Nate.

Co-creator Brendan Hunt, who also plays the eccentric Coach Beard, brushed off the critiques as “easily compartmentalized,” but Jason Sudeikis had a bit more to say. In the book, Sudeikis served up a response via TVLine, calling out detractors for not embracing the show’s deeper message. “Much like live theater, the show, especially Season 3, was asking the audience to be an active participant,” he said. “Some people want to do that, some people don’t. Some people want to judge—they don’t want to be curious.”

And Sudeikis didn’t hold back on those who missed the memo. “I’ll never understand people who will go on talking about something so brazenly that they, in my opinion, clearly don’t understand,” he said. “They don’t have imaginations and they’re not open to the experience of what it’s like to have one.”

For the Ted Lasso star, the show’s core mission was accomplished, regardless of the mixed reviews: “Everybody’s in better shape than when they started. Like a good Boy or Girl Scout at a campsite, we left it better than we found it. And if you don’t see that in that show, then I don’t know what show you’re watching,” Sudeikis said.

Whether you loved or hated Season 3, one thing is clear: Ted Lasso continues to spark conversation and challenge its viewers. Jason Sudeikis isn’t backing down from defending the show’s creative choices, and his passionate take is bound to fire up fans and critics alike.

So, do you agree with Jason Sudeikis’ take on Season 3’s deeper approach? Were you open to the “active participation” the show demanded or left wanting more of its original charm? Drop your thoughts below and join the conversation!
