How To Train Your Dragon fans, get ready to soar! The first teaser trailer for the live-action adaptation of the beloved franchise have dropped, offering fans a glimpse at the reimagined world of Berk and the bond between Hiccup and his loyal dragon, Toothless.
After a successful series of New York Times bestselling books by Cressida Cowell and a hit animated film trilogy by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, the saga is taking on a new form with this highly anticipated live-action film.
Diehard fans will recognize many familiar elements from the original 2010 animated film, with the trailer showcasing the moment Hiccup meets Toothless, recreating iconic scenes with a fresh, photo-realistic look. Gerard Butler is set to reprise his role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father and the Viking chief, adding even more nostalgia to the mix. Newcomer Mason Thames (The Black Phone, For All Mankind) takes on the role of Hiccup, with the teaser capturing the character’s trademark mix of courage and vulnerability.
The cast is rounded out by Nico Parker (Dumbo, The Last of Us) as Astrid, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Snow White and the Huntsman) as the lovable blacksmith Gobber, Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), and more. Director Dean DeBlois, the creative mastermind behind the original How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, returns to helm the live-action project. Speaking about the stakes of the new adaptation, DeBlois said, “It’s so dialed-up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him.”
The film promises to maintain the heart and soul of the original story while upping the ante with real-life visuals and more intense action. DeBlois also emphasized how relatable Hiccup remains: “He represents all of the oddballs out there, and there are many of us.” He added that Mason Thames’ audition stood out for capturing Hiccup’s awkwardness and vulnerability.
