James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, may be trading in his tuxedo for a battlefield uniform as he enters James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
Deadline reports that Craig is in talks to star in a Sgt. Rock project, reuniting with Queer director Luca Guadagnino. Screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes (Challengers, Queer) is reportedly penning the script. While no deals have been finalized, the pairing of Craig and Guadagnino has fans buzzing about what could be a bold new chapter in DC’s cinematic storytelling.
Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, Sgt. Rock debuted in 1959’s Our Army at War #83 and quickly became a fan-favorite military hero. Known for his extraordinary strength, endurance, and his uncanny “Combat Antenna” that warns him of danger, Sgt. Rock is a gritty, grounded character with a history of standing tall against overwhelming odds.
While not a superhero in the traditional sense, Sgt. Rock’s resilience and battlefield prowess make him a unique figure in the DC roster. Bringing him to the big screen could offer a fresh perspective on the comic book movie genre, especially with Craig’s reputation for embodying layered, complex characters.
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is preparing for an ambitious slate of releases. December kicks things off with the animated Creature Commandos on Max, followed by Gunn’s Superman and the highly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow starring Milly Alcock. David Corenswet is set to don the cape as the new Man of Steel.
With Sgt. Rock potentially joining this lineup, Gunn’s vision seems to balance iconic heroes with unexpected, niche characters, broadening the scope of what DC fans can expect.
Craig, best known as James Bond, is no stranger to action-packed roles, but his versatility as an actor has kept him in high demand post-007. After starring in No Time to Die (2021), Craig is set to appear in Guadagnino’s adaptation of Queer this November. He also continues his turn as detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out franchise, with the next installment slated for 2025.
Adding Sgt. Rock to his résumé could solidify Craig as a key player in yet another major cinematic universe.
Interestingly, Bruce Campbell once pitched a Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead movie to Sam Raimi, imagining it as a Michael Bay blockbuster. Campbell envisioned a blond, tough-guy actor like a Hemsworth brother taking on the role. However, with Craig’s involvement and Guadagnino’s artistic touch, fans are expecting something far more nuanced and compelling.
