Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been spotted in full Maui mode on the set of Disney’s live-action Moana, and fans can’t stop buzzing about his jaw-dropping transformation.

Photos of Johnson in Maui’s signature green leaf skirt and traditional Polynesian tattoos surfaced online, sparking a frenzy of speculation about whether it’s all him—or a little Hollywood magic.

While Johnson is known for his impressive physique, clearer leaked photos suggest his Maui transformation involves some help from a body suit. One behind-the-scenes shot reveals what appears to be a zipper or hidden opening along his spine, fueling theories that the look isn’t entirely natural.

Fans also pointed out rippling on Johnson’s arms and torso that hints at a costume enhancement. Adding further evidence, a recent fan photo shows Johnson looking as muscular as ever—but without Maui’s exaggerated bulk.

Still, the look stays true to the Demigod’s roots. Johnson rocks Maui’s iconic whale tooth necklace—referred to as sisi or wàseisei in Polynesian culture—and long flowing locks. The necklace, a symbol of high status, is a nod to Maui’s legendary persona.

The live-action Moana is still filming, but fans can dive back into the world of the beloved 2016 hit with Moana 2, hitting theaters next weekend. The animated sequel introduces Moana’s feisty younger sister Simea, voiced by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Johnson shared the importance of Moana’s cultural impact: “For these girls, my daughters, who see themselves in Moana because they are girls of color, really one of the beauties of Moana is little boys, little girls of all colors around the world can see themselves in these characters.”

Johnson’s Maui transformation is just one of his many projects. He’s starring alongside Chris Evans in Red One and gearing up for the boxing biopic The Smashing Machine. Fans are also buzzing about a potential WWE WrestleMania 41 appearance, though that hinges on his filming commitments.

With the live-action Moana now slated for release in July 2026, the hype is only building.
