The FBI has joined local law enforcement to investigate a string of high-profile burglaries targeting superstar athletes, including Kansas City Chiefs players Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. Authorities are exploring whether these break-ins are linked to a transnational crime ring, potentially one based in South America, NBC News reports.
Both incidents occurred within 48 hours earlier this month, leaving fans and officials stunned. Mahomes’ home in Belton, Missouri, was targeted just after midnight on October 6. Two days later, Kelce’s house in Leawood, Kansas, was burglarized while the Chiefs faced off against the New Orleans Saints.
According to police, Kelce’s rear door was broken, and $20,000 was stolen. While Kelce has yet to publicly address the incident, Mahomes expressed his frustration during a November 13 press conference, saying, “It’s frustrating. It’s disappointing… [It’s] obviously something you don’t want happening to anybody, but especially yourself.”
It remains unclear whether Mahomes, his wife Brittany, or their children—Sterling, 3, and Bronze, 23 months—were home at the time of the break-in.
The burglary spree doesn’t stop with the Chiefs stars. Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis’ Wisconsin home was burglarized on November 10, and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley’s home was hit in September while he attended a Minnesota Vikings game. Police are investigating similarities between the incidents, with law enforcement not ruling out local perpetrators either.
A source told ABC News that the burglaries could be timed around athletes’ predictable schedules, such as game days, making them easier targets.
The Leawood Police Department has remained tight-lipped, stating, “Our agency follows up on all investigative leads and works closely with victims to solve open cases. The Leawood Police Department is dedicated to the public we serve and will work tirelessly to ensure the City of Leawood remains one of the safest cities in the State of Kansas.”
With the FBI and local authorities ramping up their investigation, fans are hopeful that justice will be served and the culprits will be caught.
