Squid Game is ready to up the stakes, and fans better prepare for a wild ride. The Netflix mega-hit became a cultural phenomenon almost overnight, with its gut-wrenching take on childhood games turned deadly and a sharp commentary on class warfare. Lee Jung-Jae’s haunting performance as Prisoner 456 gave the show its emotional core, and fans have been eagerly awaiting what comes next since Netflix confirmed a second season.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently teased fans in an interview with Empire, hinting that Season 2 will raise the bar with a story that’s even more intense than the first. Reflecting on the immense pressure following the first season’s success, Hwang admitted, “I try not to dwell on it.”

However, he’s confident about the new direction, saying, “I believe what we’ve created on Season 2 is a deeper, more advanced story. I feel it could even surpass Season 1. But physically, mentally, it was not easy. Some of the sequences we shot were the most challenging in my whole career. It was… hell.”

Hwang also tied the upcoming season to the world’s current state, explaining how today’s grim realities influenced the show’s darker tone. “It’s not getting better out there — it’s getting worse. Worse climate change, more wars, more people dying. Compare the world [in 2021] and now — our lives are not improving. You know that!”

He revealed that this harsher reality has led to a Season 2 that’s “much crueler, scarier, and more gruesome than the first.” Hwang even questioned himself, asking, “Is this too much for people to handle?”

With Netflix confirming Squid Game will conclude after a third season, the upcoming installment is expected to set the stage for an unforgettable finale.
