DC fans, rejoice—James Gunn has just confirmed that the highly anticipated Wonder Woman TV series, Paradise Lost, is still very much alive. Taking to Threads, Gunn revealed the status of the series, responding to a fan inquiry about its development with, “Very active development.”

The announcement reignites excitement for Paradise Lost, which was first revealed back in January 2023 as part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s ambitious new DC Universe slate. Billed as a “Game of Thrones-ish story,” the series is set to explore the political and social dynamics of Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s iconic homeland, long before Diana’s birth.

“It’s really about the political intrigue behind a society of all women,” Safran teased during the initial press conference. Gunn elaborated, adding, “How did that come about? What’s the origin of an island of all women? What are the beautiful truths and the ugly truths behind all of that? And what’s the scheming like between the different power players in that society?”

While the exact storyline remains under wraps, fans speculate that the series could draw inspiration from the comic series “Paradise Island Lost” by Phil Jiminez and George Pérez, which detailed a civil war on Themyscira.

Despite Gunn’s confirmation, Paradise Lost is not yet among the imminent projects on the DCU calendar. The franchise will kick off in July with Superman: Legacy, followed by Peacemaker Season 2 in August, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in June 2026. With six other films and five TV shows in the works, Paradise Lost is expected to follow if the DCU’s initial lineup succeeds.

Gunn also touched on origin stories within the DCU, explaining that while Superman and Batman’s beginnings won’t be revisited, Wonder Woman’s origins remain a possibility. “Not as many people [know Wonder Woman’s origin story], also because she’s had various origin stories,” Gunn said, leaving the door open for a fresh take on Diana’s roots.

For now, fans can only speculate about the timeline for Paradise Lost. While “very active development” is promising, it’s important to remember that TV projects can change direction quickly in the industry. Still, with the renewed energy behind the DCU, there’s hope this intriguing prequel series will soon come to life.
