Ryan Reynolds is trading Deadpool’s red spandex for a pair of tiny superhero tights. According to Variety, Reynolds and his production company, Maximum Effort, are teaming up with Paramount Animation to give Mighty Mouse a big-screen comeback.

Free Guy writer Matt Lieberman has been tapped to pen the script, marking his latest collaboration with Reynolds after their hit movie directed by Shawn Levy. Lieberman’s credits also include The Christmas Chronicles, Scoob!, and The Addams Family, which bodes well for the reboot of the classic superhero rodent.

Created in 1942 by cartoonists Paul Terry and Izzy Klein, Mighty Mouse made his debut in The Mouse of Tomorrow and became a household name thanks to his Saturday morning cartoon series. The iconic theme song, “Here I Come to Save the Day,” has remained a defining part of the character’s legacy, and Paramount Animation is hoping Reynolds’ star power can finally deliver a Mighty Mouse movie that resonates with fans old and new.

This isn’t the first time Reynolds has dabbled in superhero content. His portrayal of Deadpool has made him a Hollywood mainstay, and he recently co-headlined the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, which became 2024’s breakout Marvel hit. Reynolds also produced and starred in Paramount’s If, solidifying his ongoing partnership with the studio under Maximum Effort’s first-look deal, which runs through 2026.

While Reynolds is busy with other projects like the sci-fi adaptation Starter Villain and the music group comedy Boy Band, the Mighty Mouse movie marks an exciting addition to his ever-expanding creative slate.

Meanwhile, Deadpool fans can enjoy a holiday treat with Story Time with Deadpool, a live show exclusive to Disney California Adventure Park running from November 15, 2024, to January 6, 2025. As always, Reynolds’ Deadpool delivers his irreverent charm, reminding fans why he’s one of the most beloved Marvel anti-heroes.
