Disney is gearing up for a colossal Thanksgiving weekend as Moana 2 is projected to dominate the box office.

According to Deadline, the highly anticipated sequel is expected to rake in $125-$135 million domestically during the five-day frame. If it hits the high end of that estimate, it will dethrone Frozen II’s 2019 record of $125 million to claim the Thanksgiving weekend crown.

Globally, Moana 2 could bring in over $225 million in its opening weekend, solidifying its place as a major hit. The sequel is already outpacing the original Moana, which debuted with $82 million domestically back in 2016 and went on to earn $248.7 million in the U.S.

The Mouse House isn’t taking any chances when it comes to marketing. With trailers, TV spots, and even a Moana 2-themed DLC for Minecraft, Disney has left no stone unturned to make this film a must-watch for families. Featuring thrilling action and catchy new songs, the sequel promises to be the perfect holiday treat.

This year’s fall box office has seen a resurgence thanks to blockbusters like Wicked and Gladiator II. While Wicked dominated last weekend with a $112.5 million haul, Moana 2 is poised to steal the show. The family-friendly musical is expected to give stiff competition to Wicked and could take a chunk out of its audience. With a shorter runtime and vibrant appeal, Moana 2 has the edge for families with younger kids.

With little competition in the family demographic until Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20, Moana 2 is poised for a lengthy reign at the box office. Other releases like Kraven the Hunter aren’t expected to make a dent, leaving Moana 2 plenty of room to shine. Analysts predict the film could easily become one of 2024’s top-grossing titles.
