This December, audiences will believe a man can truly fly again. The highly acclaimed documentary Super/Man:
The Christopher Reeve Story is set to premiere on HBO on December 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, with streaming available on Max immediately after. Following a limited theatrical release and a successful PVOD run, Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films, and CNN Films snagged the film after its Sundance Film Festival debut. Critics and fans alike have given Super/Man glowing reviews, earning the film a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The feature dives deep into the life of Christopher Reeve, the iconic actor who embodied Superman in four films, starting with the groundbreaking 1978 Superman: The Movie. The documentary is packed with never-before-seen home videos and personal archives that explore Reeve’s life before and after his devastating horseback riding accident in 1995, which left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Reeve’s journey of perseverance and activism takes center stage, showcasing his unwavering dedication to changing perceptions of paralysis and spreading hope. The film also shines a light on his role as a devoted father and husband, highlighting his relationship with Dana Reeve, the heart of the Reeve family. Their children—Will Reeve, Matthew Reeve, and Alexandra Reeve Givens—lend heartfelt insight, while archival footage includes appearances by his best friend Robin Williams, Superman director Richard Donner, and many others who knew him best.
The documentary doesn’t hold back, chronicling Reeve’s rise to fame as the Man of Steel and his transformation into a real-life hero. It weaves together intimate interviews with his children, brother, and first wife Gae Exton, alongside Hollywood legends like Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Daniels, and Glenn Close. Through these voices, Super/Man paints a rich portrait of a man whose strength extended far beyond the big screen.
“A moving and cinematic story of bravery and perseverance, triumph and tragedy, love and devotion,” the synopsis reads, capturing the spirit of a man who proved you don’t need a cape to be a hero.
If you can’t catch it on HBO or Max, the documentary is also available for digital rental ($5.99) or purchase ($14.99) on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home.
