Drake is no stranger to controversy, but his latest move has the entire hip-hop world talking.
The rapper has filed a petition against his own label, Universal Music Group, alleging their involvement in promoting Kendrick Lamar’s chart-topping track “Not Like Us.” The decision has left fans and industry insiders scratching their heads, with some calling Drake overly sensitive and others questioning his motives. However, one unexpected voice of support has come from legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex.
Taking to social media, Funkmaster Flex praised Drake for standing up to UMG and called out the label for allegedly using Payola to boost Spotify streams. “Drake is 100% right. National play,” Flex tweeted, adding,
“Drake don’t $ for play.” He didn’t stop there—Flex broke down the rumored costs of promoting music through mix shows, radio plays, and other channels, emphasizing how these practices hinder independent artists from gaining traction. “This is why independent artists don’t rise to the top,” he added.
Flex’s support for Drake has surprised some, given their rocky history. In 2018, Drake accused Flex of spreading “lies,” prompting the DJ to fire back with some harsh words about the rapper’s fanbase. Despite their past, Flex has always recognized Drake’s artistry, even calling his music “great” in previous statements. Now, the DJ is using this moment to spotlight industry practices he believes are harmful to both established and rising artists.
As for Drake, the move to challenge a giant like Universal Music Group has sparked heated debates among fans. While some see it as a bold stand against an unfair system, others view it as a distraction following his high-profile feud with Kendrick Lamar.
The larger question remains: Will this petition lead to any real change, or will it simply be another chapter in Drake’s already eventful career?
