James Gunn has officially confirmed that his upcoming take on Superman will break away from the dark, brooding tones of Zack Snyder’s era. Instead, the Man of Steel will soar as a beacon of hope for fans of all ages. Gunn’s approach signals a fresh start for DC Studios and sets the tone for a new chapter in the superhero’s legacy.

Speaking with MovieZine, Gunn revealed that his DCU won’t adhere to a singular tone. Instead, the universe will celebrate the diversity of storytelling inspired by DC Comics’ history. Gunn explained, “They’ve told stories that were more family-orientated, stories that were more adult-orientated, dark stories, light stories.” For Superman, this means Gunn is embracing a “family-friendly” vibe that contrasts with his R-rated work like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

Gunn reassured fans that Superman will remain true to his core values of hope and justice. “We have something that’s relatively serious like Superman and then something that’s relatively comedic like Peacemaker all in the same universe,” Gunn said, emphasizing that Superman will serve as a heartwarming hero for all ages.

With this new direction, Gunn has effectively distanced the DCU from Zack Snyder’s darker, more mature take on Superman. While Snyder’s vision brought a gritty edge to DC’s heroes, Gunn aims to recapture the optimism that makes Superman an enduring symbol of hope. This approach could also help DC carve out its own identity, steering clear of the interconnected, formula-driven storytelling that has defined Marvel’s MCU.

Gunn also highlighted his focus on letting each DCU project have its own unique tone. “I think that to be able to tell different kinds of stories is kind of what makes things fun,” Gunn shared. “One of the things I’ve gotten a little sick of is all these stories being relatively the same.”

By taking his time and carefully curating each project, Gunn is building a DCU that prioritizes story quality over quantity. This slow-burn strategy ensures that Superman’s return to the big screen will resonate with fans of all generations.

Superman is set to fly back into theaters on July 11, 2025, promising to bring hope and inspiration back to the DC Universe.
