Israel Vazquez, the legendary three-time super bantamweight world champion, has passed away at the age of 46 following a battle with cancer.
The tragic news was confirmed by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman in an emotional post on social media, just a month after Vazquez’s diagnosis was made public.
“May God give strength and support to his wife Laura, their children, family, and friends during these difficult times,” Sulaiman shared on X/Twitter. “Thank you, Israel, for the so many great memories that you have given us through your actions inside the ring but most importantly outside of it. You are now eternal, rest in peace.”
Vazquez, affectionately known as “Magnifico,” leaves behind a storied legacy in the boxing world. Over his illustrious career, he notched 44 wins, with 32 coming by knockout, and only five defeats. He is perhaps best remembered for his electrifying rivalry with fellow Mexican fighter Rafael Márquez. Their four bouts, two of which earned Fight of the Year honors, cemented their place in boxing history as one of the sport’s greatest rivalries.
Freddie Roach, Vazquez’s former trainer, also paid tribute. “Israel, my friend, may you rest in peace now. My condolences to the Vázquez family and to all those who called Israel their friend,” Roach said, highlighting Vazquez’s impact both in and out of the ring.
In the wake of his diagnosis, the WBC set up a GoFundMe campaign to support Vazquez and his family, raising $44,000. Despite the outpouring of love and support from the boxing community, Vazquez succumbed to the illness, leaving fans and colleagues heartbroken.
Israel Vazquez’s career was defined by his tenacity, skill, and heart. His impact on the sport of boxing transcends the ring, inspiring countless fans and fighters alike.
