Mattel’s “Wicked” doll controversy has taken a shocking turn, as the toy giant now faces a class-action lawsuit over last month’s X-rated packaging fiasco. The drama began in November when Mattel issued a recall for its Elphaba and Glinda dolls after discovering an explicit porn link mistakenly printed on the packaging. The recall came with a public apology and a promise to remove the toys from shelves.
However, the fallout isn’t over. A South Carolina mother has filed a lawsuit against Mattel, claiming the company failed to adequately address the issue.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the woman says she purchased one of the dolls for her young daughter just before the recall. The child, using an iPhone to search the link on the packaging, was allegedly exposed to “hardcore, full-on nude pornographic images depicting actual intercourse.”
The mother described the incident as “horrifying,” stating she has evidence of the error and its impact. She alleges Mattel didn’t offer refunds for the recalled dolls and failed to ensure their product was age-appropriate for children as young as 4. The lawsuit accuses Mattel of negligence, with the mom claiming she and her daughter suffered emotional distress as a result.
In her complaint, the plaintiff said, “I would have never purchased the doll had I known there was an X-rated link on the box.” She believes Mattel should be held accountable for the oversight and its consequences.
The “Wicked” doll release was intended to tie in with the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the Broadway hit. Instead, it’s become a legal and public relations nightmare for Mattel.
Mattel has yet to comment on the lawsuit, but the case raises serious questions about the company’s quality control and response to mistakes of this magnitude.
