Eminem’s younger half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Kane Mathers, has broken his silence following the death of their mother, Debbie Nelson, at 69. Nelson passed away after a battle with advanced lung cancer, leaving a complex legacy of family ties and estrangement.

Nate took to Instagram on Tuesday, just one day after news of her passing broke. Sharing his raw emotions, he wrote, “Hatred and mixed emotions today,” on his Instagram Story, revealing the complicated feelings he’s processing.

Nelson’s relationship with her sons, Eminem and Nate, was marked by years of turmoil. At just eight years old, Nate was placed in foster care, later being adopted by Eminem when he turned 16. Their mother’s difficult history with both sons inspired many of Eminem’s most emotional tracks, including the scathing 2002 hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.”

Nelson had Nate with Fred Samara Jr., 14 years after she welcomed Eminem during her relationship with Marshall Bruce Mathers Sr. Despite their struggles, Nelson once expressed a deep desire to mend ties with her children. In a 2008 interview with Village Voice, she said, “I’m not ever gonna give up on my kids. I won’t give up on anybody. There’s hope for everybody. It’s a matter of just basically swallowing your pride.”

While Eminem’s current relationship with his mother at the time of her death remains unclear, he hinted at reconciliation in his 2013 track “Headlights.” In the heartfelt song, he rapped, “My mom probably got it the worst… mad I didn’t get the chance to thank you for being my mom and my dad.”

Three months before her passing, InTouch Weekly reported that Nelson was in the final stages of her illness, moving between a cancer center and staying with family. A source claimed Eminem had not spoken to his mother in years but ensured she was cared for financially. “He’s good to his mom. He makes sure he takes care of her, but they don’t really talk,” the insider revealed.

As Nate and Eminem reflect on their mother’s death, fans are left wondering how the deeply personal loss will shape their lives moving forward.
