Chris Evans is making a Marvel comeback! According to reports from TheWrap, the fan-favorite actor is officially joining the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, marking his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This announcement follows Marvel Studios’ shocking reveal at San Diego Comic-Con that Robert Downey Jr. would portray Doctor Doom, setting the stage for the next Avengers chapter.
But here’s the kicker: it’s unclear whether Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, or step into another part of the multiverse. After retiring the shield in Avengers: Endgame and passing the mantle to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Evans briefly returned in Deadpool & Wolverine, not as Cap, but as Johnny Storm—the Human Torch from his pre-MCU Fantastic Four days.
Evans’ Marvel legacy is extensive, with 11 appearances between 2011 and 2019, including his iconic role as Captain America in all four Avengers films. While speculation about his return has swirled for years, Evans has been cautious about reprising the role.
“It was a really unbelievable ride, and the character’s just so dear to me,” Evans said on the D23 podcast in 2022. “The truth is, the role isn’t even mine anymore. The role is Anthony Mackie’s.” Evans emphasized that any potential return as Steve Rogers—not as Captain America—would require a “near-perfect recipe.”
The excitement doesn’t stop with Evans. Marvel has announced that Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, will return to helm Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. These films will cap off Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, with Downey’s Doctor Doom stepping in as the central villain after plans for Kang the Conqueror shifted.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
