NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss shocked fans with a heartfelt announcement on Instagram Live, revealing he has secretly been battling cancer. The retired wide receiver shared the news on Friday, opening up about his diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing recovery.
“I’ve told y’all over the last couple of weeks about me battling something internally, and your boy is a cancer survivor,” Moss declared to his followers. “I’ve been in the hospital for six days. I just got out today — thank God!”
Moss explained that doctors discovered cancer in his bile duct, located between the pancreas and liver. His medical team performed a six-hour Whipple procedure—a complex surgery that removes parts of the pancreas, small intestine, gallbladder, and bile duct to treat tumors.
“They found it in the bile duct, right in-between the pancreas and the liver,” Moss explained. “Dr. Martini, you’re the man. I had a Whipple procedure. I am forever grateful.”
Despite the trying ordeal, Moss expressed gratitude for his doctors, family, and support system. “These have been trying times, but I made it through,” he said, adding a reminder for everyone, especially men, to prioritize their health.
Earlier this month, Moss took a break from ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, where he’s a beloved host, without disclosing his condition. “I’m battling something, man, and it’s something internal,” Moss said at the time, urging fans to “get your bloodwork done.”
On Friday, Moss reassured fans he would be back soon. “I promise you guys I will be back on set. I miss you guys and hopefully I can get with you guys soon.”
Fans and fellow athletes quickly flooded Moss’s Instagram with messages of support. In a heartfelt tribute, the New England Patriots posted, “We have celebrated so many tremendous catches by Randy Moss during his Hall of Fame career, but none more important than his most recent catch. Cancer is about to get Mossed, and Patriots fans everywhere will continue to celebrate!”
As Moss looks ahead to recovery and a triumphant return, his story is a powerful reminder of the importance of regular checkups and staying strong in the face of adversity.
