Jim Carrey isn’t ready to say goodbye to Hollywood just yet. The iconic actor, 62, recently reflected on his 2022 comments about being “fairly serious” about retiring, and it seems the door to his acting career is still wide open.
Speaking with Comicbook.com, Carrey clarified his earlier remarks, explaining that stepping away from the spotlight might not be as straightforward as it seemed. “You can’t be definite about these things,” he admitted. “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about ‘power-resting.’ Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with, it just — things tend to change.”
Carrey emphasized that his decisions aren’t motivated by money, joking about his financial situation in true comedic fashion. “I joke about the money… But I never know,” he quipped, referencing his comment to the Associated Press where he joked about taking on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for financial reasons. Doubling down on his sarcasm, he added, “Flea circuses are my thing. I gambled it all away.”
Despite flirting with the idea of retirement, Carrey has plenty on his plate. He’s currently in pre-production for Evergreen Pines and the Fading Summer, a mystery film directed by David Robert Mitchell. Looking even further ahead, Carrey is open to reprising his role as the Grinch, thanks to advancements in technology.
“The thing about it is that, on the day, I had to do that with a ton of makeup, and I could hardly breathe, and it was an extremely excruciating process,” Carrey recalled about filming How the Grinch Stole Christmas. “The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids, it’s for the kids, it’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do some other things.”
Carrey originally floated the idea of retiring during a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, where he declared he had done “enough” and wanted to pursue other creative endeavors. But with new projects and the potential for returning to iconic roles, it’s clear Carrey isn’t closing the curtain on his career just yet.
