The Penguin may be waddling back onto your screens for another season! Director Matt Reeves revealed in an interview with Variety on Wednesday that discussions for The Penguin Season 2 are underway. While a second season isn’t set in stone, Reeves expressed enthusiasm about diving deeper into Gotham’s underbelly with the series’ breakout characters.
Reeves shared, “We’re talking to [showrunner Lauren LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”
This revelation comes as Reeves also gears up for The Batman — Part II, with the script nearing completion and production scheduled for next year. The sequel will reunite Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. However, Zoë Kravitz’s return as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, remains uncertain.
Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot was one of the highlights of the HBO miniseries. Yet, Farrell’s comments might dampen fans’ excitement. The actor admitted that playing the character in The Penguin took a toll, both emotionally and physically. “I never want to put on that f—ing suit and f—ing head again,” Farrell told The Hollywood Reporter. Despite his reluctance, Farrell is set to reprise the role in The Batman — Part II.
The Penguin series expanded on the gritty, street-level crime and corruption hinted at in Reeves’ 2022 hit The Batman, showcasing a more personal side of Gotham’s criminal underworld. While initially conceived as a one-off miniseries, its popularity has fans clamoring for more.
Both The Batman and The Penguin are currently streaming on Max, keeping fans immersed in Reeves’ dark, grounded take on Gotham City. Whether Farrell’s Penguin waddles back for another season remains to be seen, but the world of Gotham is clearly far from done.
