As Sonic the Hedgehog 3 electrifies audiences in theaters today, Paramount has officially confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in the works.

According to Variety, fans can expect the next installment in this blockbuster franchise to hit theaters in spring 2027. While details remain under wraps, the announcement isn’t a shocker—Sonic’s cinematic universe has been a massive win for Paramount, with the first two films dominating the box office and Sonic 3 poised to rake in an impressive $55-$60 million on opening weekend.

Producer Toby Ascher hinted earlier this year that Sonic’s universe has plenty of stories left to tell, saying, “There’s such a rich universe of stories. I don’t see us slowing down at all.” It’s safe to assume that director Jeff Fowler and Ascher will continue steering the ship, but Jim Carrey’s return as the nefarious Dr. Ivo Robotnik is less certain. Carrey, who’s credited with bringing new life to the character, has hinted at retirement in recent interviews. Whether Sonic 3 marks his final showdown remains to be seen.

The Sonic Cinematic Universe is already proving to be expansive. With fan-favorite Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves, making his debut in Sonic 3, the franchise is setting up new possibilities for future films. Shadow’s introduction has even sparked whispers of a potential spin-off. Paramount’s previous spin-off series Knuckles racked up an impressive 4 million streaming hours in its opening weekend on Paramount+, so another series focusing on Shadow could easily be on the horizon.

For now, fans can bask in the chaos and speed of Sonic 3 while keeping their eyes peeled for what’s next. Whether it’s new characters, more spin-offs, or another epic clash between Sonic and Robotnik, this blue blur isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
