Denzel Washington is embracing a new chapter in his life. The 69-year-old Oscar winner added “minister” to his list of accolades after being baptized at the Kelly Temple in New York City on Saturday. During the ceremony, Washington also received his minister’s license, marking a significant milestone in his faith journey.
“It took a while, but I’m finally here,” Washington told the congregation before being immersed in water. Reflecting on his spiritual path, he added, “If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.”
Washington’s wife of 41 years, Pauletta Washington, was by his side and spoke proudly about her husband’s commitment to his faith. “Forty-six years later, here I’m still standing next to him as only God will have it,” she said, as Denzel sat on the steps of the pulpit, visibly emotional. “You are the head of our house and you have set a great example for our children, who are now adult children who know the difference because we have shown them the difference.”
The couple, who share four children—John, 40, Katia, 37, and twins Olivia and Malcolm, 33—celebrated this personal milestone with heartfelt gratitude.
Denzel posed for photos with his baptism certificate and minister’s license, dressed humbly in a gray T-shirt and black sweatpants.
This spiritual moment comes just over a month after Washington spoke openly about his faith in Hollywood during an interview with Esquire. “When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my lord and savior. I’m unafraid,” he said, addressing the challenges of openly discussing religion in the entertainment industry.
“It’s not talked about in this town. … It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy. But that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe,” he added, emphasizing his freedom from public opinion when it comes to his beliefs.
Denzel’s baptism and ministerial license symbolize a deep commitment to his faith and serve as an inspiration to others.
