Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old at the center of the shocking killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday, pleading not guilty to murder and terrorism charges. The courtroom was packed with spectators, including nearly two dozen women vying for seats in the gallery, as the case continues to grip New York City.

Dressed in a maroon sweater, white shirt, khaki pants, and orange shoes, Mangione faced Judge Gregory Carro during his arraignment. His attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, did not hold back in criticizing the handling of the case, particularly the viral attention it has received and the highly publicized perp walk involving New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“I am concerned about my client’s right to a fair trial. He is being prejudiced by these statements, and no safeguards are in place,” Friedman Agnifilo told the court. She further condemned the mayor’s participation in the staged perp walk, calling it “the biggest perp walk I’ve ever seen.”

“The mayor should know about due process, given his own problems,” she added, referencing Adams’ federal indictment on bribery and fraud charges. “He wanted to show symbolism. But my client is not a symbol.”

Mangione is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, sharing the facility with Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is awaiting trial on separate charges related to alleged sex trafficking and racketeering. The next chapter in Mangione’s legal saga will unfold on February 21, when he is scheduled to return to court.

Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News opened the door for a new opportunity for Jenkins. With a history in finance, he broke into the journalism game by writing on blogs and other freelance websites before branching into sports and entertainment news. Being in tune with pop culture doesn't mean it has to make sense, but he tries. Favorite bands include any group from Seattle who formed between 1991 and 1999. 5 Ozzfests under his belt and 12 Warped Tours, but his last concert was a bluegrass AC/DC cover band that was not 100% terrible.
