Variety just stirred the pot with their “Worst Songs of 2024” list, and a few big hip-hop names landed in the crosshairs. Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Ice Spice all made the cut, alongside their controversial tracks that divided listeners throughout the year.

Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign’s “CARNIVAL,” featuring Rich The Kid and Playboi Carti, caught heat for what Variety called its “blatant misogyny” and an over-the-top chorus that didn’t sit well with critics. Nicki Minaj’s Megan Thee Stallion diss track, “Big Foot,” was slammed as “embarrassingly outlandish.” Meanwhile, Ice Spice’s lead Y2K! single, “Think U The S**t (Fart),” earned the dubious honor of being labeled one of the “most vapid novelties” of the year.

Other hip-hop tracks that joined the list included Camila Cabello’s “I LUV IT” with Playboi Carti and Tom MacDonald’s “Facts” featuring Ben Shapiro. But unlike Kanye, Nicki, and Ice Spice, those tracks were easier targets for their lack of artistic merit. The bigger names drew harsher critiques, likely because of the high expectations placed on them.

While some fans agree with Variety’s takedown, others have defended these tracks, calling the criticism overblown. Kanye’s VULTURES 1 album, Ice Spice’s Y2K! project, and Nicki’s Pink Friday 2 era each sparked plenty of debate, and love-it-or-hate-it reactions.

Looking ahead, Kanye reportedly has a new album, Bully, on the way. Ice Spice just dropped her Y2K! deluxe edition, and Nicki is expected to add even more to her Pink Friday 2 catalog soon. Whether these artists redeem themselves or court more controversy in 2025 remains to be seen.
